A sermon about St. Albert the Great, from the time of his beatification

November 12, 2009

I found me another interesting book about St. Albert the Great, over at Google Books. This one is fairly short; it’s a sermon in French.

(The really sad thing is how much of the French I can understand. The Internet and Latin are globalizing my braaaaaainnn.)

Anyway, the conceit of the sermon is that the preacher is providing a world map of St. Albert. Since he really was the Universal Doctor, this is fair enough.

The book, provided to us all by the good offices of Ghent University, rejoices in the title: “Predication et oraison a l’honneur du bien-heureux Albert Le Grand De l’Ordre des RR. PP. prescheurs, evesque de Ratisbonne et maistre du docteur angelique S. Thomas d’Aquin, prononcez au temps de sa béatification dans la ville de Douay, Par Monsieur A. De Wingles, Prestre licentie est Droicts.”

M. De Wingles’ book was published in Brussels in 1644, at the Printshop of Martyn de Bossuyt, Bookseller, and legal printer of the city. His shop was by the Church of the Magdalene, at the Sign of St. Peter.

The church is still there, and Google Maps shows that there’s still at least one bookshop that’s quite close. :)
