Maybe Pelosi Will Talk to Her Bishop Now

Come January, I gotta say that I won’t miss Pelosi’s “unique” take on Catholic teaching as Speaker/Theologian of the House, much less her misquotes of St. Augustine. Of course, she’ll still be a force in the House as Minority Leader — unless she’s unelected for that post by her fellow Democrats in the House, as could well occur after this bloodbath.

But a Minority Leader is a lot less likely to let the power go to his or her head, ’cause there isn’t nearly as much power involved. Pretty soon she’ll see that “civilization as we know it” (as she described the election stakes) hasn’t toppled. The drama will fade, and she’ll be a better legislator and person for it. Maybe she’ll get some better advisors, and stop believing books that misquote Augustine. 🙂

(The Speaker of the House is elected at the start of every new Congress; the parties in the House each submit one candidate. Usually voting proceeds along party lines. The Majority Leader and Minority Leader are elected among the members of the majority and minority parties before the beginning of a new Congress, in whatever way each wants to do the electing. The 112th Congress will start on January 3, 2011, so there’s a couple of months of lame duck Congress to go.)
