I know a good number of people who say they're Christian, but don't believe what the Bible says or what Tradition says. (They believe in reincarnation, for example.)

But the Bible and Tradition are the Word of God, and Jesus Christ is the Word of God. So if you don't believe in the Bible and Tradition, you don't believe in Jesus.

So logically, they can't possibly be Christian in any meaningful way.

I used to say something like that when I still believed in reincarnation. What I meant was that I admired Jesus as an enlightened human being and great teacher, and that I tried to follow His guidelines and examples. Naturally, I didn’t think He was divine in any way.

St. Jerome’s quote “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ” (to which I would add “ignorance of Tradition”) definitely applied to my case.
