Um, you do know that people in the ancient world also thought that maintaining total silence was something weird? Keeping times of silence is an ascetic act that requires no extra equipment but is always somewhat difficult, which is why monks and ascetics around the world have done it for ages. It’s not something that only kids today find hard.
A primitive village or camp is noisy. You can’t even tune out the noises, because they don’t blend. You can tell exactly what people are doing.
Even a clearing in the woods is not a truly quiet place. Anybody who’s ever tried to make recordings can tell you how loud the natural world is. And I guarantee you that even in the dead of night in the middle of nowhere, you will hear plenty of natural sounds.
If you want total silence, you have to go to extremely high tech stuff like sound damping technology.
