An Interesting Detective Manga I Found by Chance

Sabu to Ichi Torimonohikae is an old manga from the Sixties. It’s set in old Edo. The detectives are a young thieftaker named Sabu, and an old blind masseur/swordsman named Ichi. Naturally, the old masseur is very underestimated.

The mysteries seem to be a little less grotesque than some Japanese mysteries are. But it’s still pretty much concerned with lowlifes and bad behavior, including some from the detectives. There’s also a fair amount of samurai violence. It gets pretty grim, albeit not as grim as Lone Wolf and Cub.

It’s not available in the US, but there’s a scanlation here.

  1. I’ve never read anything Chance has done.
    Oh wait…
This sounds like its part of the Zatoichi series which spawned movies & TV shows thruought the 60’s and (I suspect) inspired the revival of the ‘drifter saves the day’ genre in the US in the ’70s.

Zatoichi is also a blind swordsman and a masseuse…he’s also awesome.

    • I actually have seen a Zatoichi movie, but I didn’t remember the character name!

It sounds like the comics might be an unofficial sequel. The movie/novel character is younger and his title + name is Zato no Ichi, whereas the comics guy is middle-aged or elderly, and his title + name is Matsu no Ichi. (The prefixes are apparently office grades in the Edo guild of blind men.)

Anyway, this manga is by the same guy who did Cyborg 009 and Kikaider.
