Susan Boyle Roundup

She was born disabled, grew up the laughingstock of her school, lived all her life in her parents’ house and cared for them until they died, and now lives alone except for her cat Pebbles. Oh, yeah, and she goes to Mass every Sunday and sings in the choir, except for the last two years when she was too depressed to sing in public after her mother died.

And at the age of 47, she broke her silence and went on Britain’s Got Talent.

Oh, and get this — they filmed not in her village, Blackburn, West Lothian, but in the next one over, Bathgate, because the show thought her town was too hardscrabble and ugly. Perhaps their lesson is not yet learned.

An interesting story from the Daily Mirror.

A very nice editorial from the Herald.

A marketing guy’s take on Boyle as an example of just telling the story instead of lying or hyping things up.

Alas, many of the stories, while fully acknowledging a conquest of the audience and expectations that was as thorough as Genghis Khan’s sweep through Central Asia, are written by people who cannot help insulting her. Their mental habits (and envy) are displayed despite their intentions. Twits.

  1. As a long-time West Lothianer – if Bathgate is prettier, then Blackburn must be pretty grim 🙂

You really must listen to her sing! She brought a smile to Simon’s face!

  3. Susan is my new heroine!
Talk about overcoming the tyranny of low expectations!
And she took their mockery with a knowing, yet charitable smile, shows true character. More than those journalists have.
    Hooray for Susan!

  4. Incredible voice. Incredible video. Incredible story. But mostly, incredible human being. Thank you.

Those of us on the outside because we didn’t win the genetic lottery don’t need to be reminded about sociey’s unwritten rules and its double standard, but we do need to be reminded how to deal with it all with grace.

    What an inspiring story!

I bet she waiting soooooo long for this. I’m sure it was worth it as it seems all her struggles and disappointments vaporated in an instant.

The apex of greatness is reserved for the least among us and Susan is the best example of this.

Thank You Lord for such an example as Susan Boyle.

Susan Boyle is absolutely fantastic and I sincerely hope that she is given opportunities to share her voice with the world, with monetary benefits to better her living circumstances. She deserves that, and much more!

  17. As a black man in St. Louis Mo, and no stranger to being a societal underdog “underdog” ‘witnessing Ms Boyle”s video as with our recent political changes here in America was just an awesome and uplifting experience, She has been the subject of many a church and shool service and is an inspiration to our children. Thank you Ms Boyle!
